What You Need to Know About Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling at the Center for Soulful Relationships in San Jose, CA

The counseling services I offer aren’t your run-of-the-mill therapy services.

In traditional couples counseling you meet with your therapist weekly, or every other week, for anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, and it takes forever to see and experience lasting results.

In each session, right as you’re starting to get to the good stuff, your therapist looks at the clock and says, “time’s up, that’s all for today.” If you’re lucky, they might give you some remedial homework assignment, like going on a date.

Who’s got time for that basic stuff?

Not you.

You’re ready for something different, something that offers solutions that fit your busy schedule, and you’re ready to do the work that helps you experience results pretty quickly.

If that sounds like you, you’re ready for my couples therapy and marriage counseling retreats.

WHO I WORK WITH
I work with couples who are dedicated to their relationship and are willing to do whatever is necessary to meet their shared relationship goals.

Some of your goals might be:

  • changing the pattern of behavior that keep you and your partner stuck when disagreements arise

  • learning how to communicate in a way that both you and your partner feel seen, heard and understood

  • developing the tools to connect more intimately

  • learning how to turn towards one another instead of away from each other when you need one another the most

WHO I DON’T WORK WITH
I don’t work with couples who are in active affairs, who are in active untreated alcoholism or addition, or who are coming to counseling as a last ditch effort after one partner gave an ultimatum.

WHAT A COUPLES THERAPY AND MARRIAGE COUNSELING RETREAT LOOKS LIKE
First, you, your partner, and I will meet either in person in my San Jose office or virtually for a 60-70 minute pre-retreat interview. We will discuss more in depth your relationship concerns and what your goals are, then we will then create a plan for your 2-day retreat.

Day one of your marriage counseling retreat starts off with a thorough review of the homework that was part of your plan. You will learn:

  • how to listen to your partner and your partner will learn how to listen to you,

  • the patterns that keep you and your partner in an unfulfilling, dissatisfying loop,

  • what influences have shaped both you and your partner and how you show up in your relationship.

Day two of your marriage counseling retreat begins with a review of any new insights and ah-has that came up for you overnight. Then we dive into the skills all couples need. You will learn:

  • how to ask for what you want in a way that your partner can understand,

  • strategies for navigating disagreements when they arise,

  • tools to connect with one another in a way that helps each of you feel deeply seen, heard, and understood.

By the end of our second day together you will have learned more about yourself and your partner, what makes each of you tick, how you respond in times of challenge, and all of the tools for creating more intimacy and connection in your relationship.

You will also receive additional post-retreat homework and recommendations customized just for you.

Lastly, we will meet again in 3 to 6 months at my office for a 90-minute post-retreat interview to follow up and help you fine tune any areas that still need some refining.

YOUR COUPLES THERAPY AND MARRIAGE COUNSELING RETREAT INCLUDES

  • One 60-70 minute pre-retreat interview, either in my San Jose office or virtually, in which we will thoroughly discuss your current concerns and your goals to develop the best plan of action.

  • Questionnaires to help identify your current concerns, relationship history, family history, and levels of satisfaction in various areas of your relationship.

  • Pre-retreat homework.

  • Two day in-person retreat, either in my office, or in your home (for an additional fee).

  • Skills, strategies, and exercises to help you develop the tools you need.

  • Further recommendations and homework post-retreat.

  • One 90-minute post-retreat interview 3 to 6 months following your retreat, either in my office or virtually, to follow up and help you fine tune anything that still needs refining.

  • Essentially 9 months to one year worth of therapy in just a few days.

COUPLES WHO PARTICIPATE IN MY COUNSELING RETREATS REPORT EXPERIENCING SIGNIFICANT SHIFTS IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP, INCLUDING

  • less disagreements,

  • knowing how to handle misunderstandings,

  • being able to ask for what they want and actually getting it,

  • more hugs and kisses,

  • more time and attention,

  • greater understanding of one another and themselves leading to greater overall marital satisfaction.

WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE IT IN TO THE OFFICE DURING YOUR OFFICE HOURS?
Couples therapy and marriage counseling retreats must be done in person.

Most of my clients either have flexible schedules, or schedule their retreats far out enough in advance that they can ask for time off and plan accordingly.

I offer the 2-day retreats on Thursdays and Fridays. One weekend a month I am able to offer either a Friday-Saturday* or Saturday-Sunday* combo.

The pre-and-post-retreat interviews can be done either in person or virtually, during regular business hours.

For clients who participate in individual therapy, I offer virtual appointments during regular business hours. My clients enjoy the flexibility virtual options provide them to be able to actively participate in therapy, while still tending to the demands of their day-to-day lives and jobs.

DO YOU OFFER COUNSELING RETREATS FOR INDIVIDUALS?
Yes, I do! Feel free to apply and tell me more about what you are looking for.
